Jodhpurs are named after a city in India. The style is a pair of riding pants with leather patches at the knee and a cuff bottom that goes over the riding boot and is held down with an elastic strap under you boot. Children wear jods more often then adults. It is the proper horse show attire for children. Jodhpurs that fit correctly are long enough, when the bottom elastic strap is under your shoe, does not pull the crotch of the riding pants down too low. Children’s jodhpurs should fit comfortably at the waist and leg. If the jodhpurs are too baggy, the garter strap makes the pants bunch around the knee. To check to see if the leg length is correct, put on their paddock boots and have someone pull the cuff down to the floor behind their heel. It should easily reach the floor. That gives them enough room to be able to stretch their heel down with out their pants riding up.
Children’s Jodhpurs are available in many colors and a full range of styles. Beige or tan is the correct color for jods to be in the horse show ring. Schooling jods may be worn in any color. Styles vary depending on either the comfort of the child or how formal the jodhpur must be. Some of the brands such as JPC offer pull-on jods. Many children like the way an elastic waist fits. More formal jodhpur styles have a front or side zipper. Remember to coordinate the color of their jodhpurs to their show jacket. Lastly, wear a belt and garter straps. |
